Approximately fifty per cent of the tumours contain scattered, small, spherical, laminated, calcified bodies (psammoma bodies or calcospherites). These bodies are present in the fibrovascular core of the papillae, in the intervening connective tissue stroma, or even in the non-neoplastic thyroid stroma some distance from the tumour. In some cases there is an intense focal fibrous reaction, which may be seen as thick strands within the tumour, or as a pseudocapsule in which single or small clumps of atypical polygonal neoplastic cells lie embedded.
